FDA Reports Adverse Reactions to Botox Use

A report was recently released by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in order to inform the public of the adverse reactions linked to the use of Botox, Botox Cosmetic, and Myobloc. The report surfaces after studies link the use of these anti-aging serums to serious health complications, such as respiratory failure and death. The study concludes that these reactions occurred in patients who were receiving treatments in a variety of conditions and at a variety of doses. No specific dose or type of treatment has been identified as being particularly dangerous yet. The FDA believes that the reactions may be related to an overdose of the drugs; however, nothing has been officially concluded as the investigation continues. Although many may wonder if defective drugs were used in the conditions that have been reported, there is no sign that this has been found to be true. The reactions, however, have been found in both FDA-approved and nonapproved uses.

The startling report suggests that children who are treated for spasticity which accompanies cerebral palsy, are at the greatest risk of the dangerous reactions. The use of botulism toxins to treat children with cerebral palsy is not FDA approved, but is a growing concern now that new information about the drugs have been released. According to the report, the reactions cause symptoms similar to botulism, including weakness, difficulty breathing, and difficulty swallowing. The FDA has not advised the discontinuation of these products yet, as the investigation has not yet been fully completed.
