On April 10th, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that a fungus called Fusarium had caused serious infections of the cornea. Several people reported a significant loss of vision from the infection, known as Fusarium keratitis resulting in a corneal transplant. Fusarium keratitis infects the cornea – the clear, round dome covering the eye’s iris and pupil.
Symptoms include:
- Sudden blurry vision
- Unusual redness of the eye
- Pain in your eye
- Excessive tearing or discharge
- Increased sensitivity to light
The product responsible for these infections was Bausch & Lomb’s ReNu with MositureLoc. One month later, Bausch & Lomb announced a global recall of ReNu.
