Georgia Sugar Plant Explosion Under Investigation, Six Confirmed Deaths
An investigative team composed of personnel from local and federal agencies is looking into the cause of an explosion at the Port Wentworth, Ga. Imperial Sugar processing plant last week which has caused six confirmed deaths, left two workers still missing in the rubble, and injured dozens more. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) are both involved in the investigation. Preliminary results indicate that sugar dust, a combustible substance which has caused explosions at other factories in the past, may have been at the root of last week's explosion.
The Port Wentworth factory was last inspected in October of last year, receiving two violations: one for an opening in a packing room which could allow pests to enter, and improper protection of buckets used in packing molasses.
