BP files lawsuit against lawyer due to ‘fraudulent’ oil spill claims

Posted on Thursday, December 26th, 2013 at 9:19 am

London-based oil giant BP Plc (formerly known as British Petroleum) filed a federal lawsuit on Tuesday, December 17 against Texas lawyer Mikal Watts accusing him  of fraudulently claiming to represent thousands of plaintiffs who supposedly were affected by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

According to the lawsuit filed in New Orleans, the Social Security numbers representing Watts’ clients are dummy numbers or belong to other people who were not actually making claims. According to the lawsuit, Watts filed 648 claims, 631 of which have already been processed. Only eight were eligible claims.

BP spokesman Geoff morel stated that “the false representations improperly inflated the value of potential claims against the Seafood Compensation Program and resulted in an overblown $2.3 billion fund.”

At Williams Kherkher, we know that there are many legitimate businesses and individuals in need of compensation as a result of the BP oil spill. If you need help filing a claim and want the help of an attorney with a proven track record handling such cases, call us at (888) 220-0640.
