At around 8:15 a.m. on Friday, February 8, 2019, a woman was found dead in the backyard of her home in the 12830 block of Susanna Lane, and she appeared to have multiple dog bites all over her body.
According to Houston Police, officers were conducting a welfare check on Elaine Richman, 66, after she had not appeared for her dog training classes in two days. Upon their arrival on Richman’s residence, they found her dead in her backyard with several dog bites on her arms, hands, and face.
Preliminary autopsy determines that a sharp force injury was the cause of death. Investigators found two adult Doberman pinschers in the house, but did not say whether the dogs were responsible for the bites or Richman’s death.
As of right now, Richman’s death is ruled as an accident, but a complete autopsy is requested to fully determine the cause of her death.
It is unfortunate to hear of the death of Elaine Richman. Sadly, she is not the only one whose life is taken away by a dog attack. In a study conducted by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), about 4.7 million dog bites occur in the United States every year, and 800,000 of those bites result in medical care. This can be interpreted as 1 in 69 people getting bitten by a dog annually.
These numbers paint a terrible picture, but according to National Canine Research Council, 81% of dog bites cause no injury at all or only minor injuries that do not require medical attention. In other words, there is only a 1 in 112,400 chance of dying from a dog bite or strike, so more often than not, dying from a dog bite is highly unlikely.
That said, dog attacks can be fatal when they happen, and they can be as complicated as they are devastating to the victims and their respective families.
