Causes of gynecomastia

Posted on Monday, January 18th, 2016 at 9:48 am

Gynecomastia is a condition in which the male breast is enlarged due to a hormone imbalance. It may be due to the blocking of testosterone or the increase in estrogen levels. Several health conditions may cause the development of gynecomastia, according to the Mayo Clinic. They are:

  • Starvation/malnutrition – Levels of testosterone drop when the body does not get ample nutrition, while estrogen levels remain the same.
  • Hyperthyroidism — A condition in which the thyroid gland produces excessive thyroxine, throwing the body’s hormones into imbalance.
  • Hypogonadism – A condition that interrupts regular testosterone production.
  • Liver failure/cirrhosis
  • Tumors – Particularly those involving the testes, as they may impact the production of hormones.
  • Kidney failure – Hormonal imbalances are a common aspect of regular hemodialysis.
  • Aging – Hormonal changes are common results of aging, especially in overweight males.

Another cause of gynecomastia is the use of the antipsychotic drug Risperdal. The effects of this prescription medication have affected many men over the years, causing the physical condition that often leads to physical discomfort and embarrassment. If you have suffered as a result of the drug Risperdal, speak with our lawyers at Williams Kherkher today by calling our office at (888) 220-0640.
