Court dismisses BP’s negation of oil spill compensation

On Monday, March 3, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit has rejected London-based oil giant BP’s request to deny claims for businesses seeking compensation that weren’t able to prove their economic losses had been directly caused by the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

BP spokesman and senior vice president Geoff Morrell said the company doesn’t agree with the decision, saying “claimants whose alleged injuries are not traceable to the Deepwater Horizon accident and oil spill…are not proper class members under the terms of the settlement.”

BP wants to set the settlement cost at the amount that was reached in 2012, which was $7.8 billion. However, the amount has ballooned up to $9.2 billion in recent calculations.
