Dallas — Woman Killed in 3-Vehicle Hit-And-Run Accident
Posted on Thursday, February 7th, 2019 at 4:34 am
At approximately 11 p.m. on Wednesday, February 6, 2019, a 22-year-old woman was killed in a three-vehicle crash that occurred in Dallas.
According to the police, the accident occurred near Westmoreland Road and Davis Street. Andrea Osmara Rodriguez-Perez, 22, was driving eastbound on Davis when she was hit by Julio Menendez-Guerrero, 24, who was driving southbound on Westmoreland and ran a red light at an intersection. The impact of the collision caused Rodriguez-Perez’s vehicle to hit another vehicle near the intersection. Rodriguez-Perez was later found pinned in her car.
The victim was brought to a hospital, but unfortunately she later died from her injuries.
Menendez-Guerrero fled from the scene but was caught later on. He was found to be intoxicated and was arrested for intoxication manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid.
It is unfortunate to hear of the passing of Andrea Osmara Rodriguez-Perez. Alas, she is only one of the very many people who have died because of a car accident. Car accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In a statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to roughly about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
A particular kind of vehicular accident that is quite common and deadly is a hit-and-run. According to a study done by roadside-assistance giant AAA, there were 2,049 hit-and-run deaths that occurred in 2016. This number is the highest annual total on record, and in the decade leading up to that number, 682,000 hit-and-run crashes happened each year.
Texas has been reported as the 8th worst state for hit-and-run fatalities. This is a fact that is appalling, and something must be done to change that.
Aside from hit-and-run accidents, DUI (driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs) accidents are just as common and just as appalling. DUI, in particular, is quite appalling. The NHTSA reports that about 28 people die every day because of drunk-driving crashes, and in 2010, 10,228 died in DUI accidents while about 345,000 were injured. All these numbers paint a terrible picture indeed.
