Fort Worth — Man Dies After Vape Pen Explodes

On January 29, 2019, a Fort Worth man died after his vape pen exploded, thus cutting a major artery in his neck.
According to reports, William Eric Brown, 24, was sitting in his car in front of the Smoke & Vape DZ store at the 4500 block of Golden Triangle when his pen exploded. He was then taken to John Peter Smith Hospital where he died because of the “penetrating trauma from the exploding vaporizer pen,” which referred to the shrapnel from the blast that severed his left carotid artery.
It is unfortunate to hear of the death of William Eric Brown. Alas, it has slowly come to the attention of everyone that e-cigarettes like the one that Brown used can actually explode. According to the U.S. Fire Administration in 2017, there were 133 acute injuries from e-cigarettes and other similar devices that happened between 2009 and 2016. Most of the fires and explosions occurred while the e-cigarette was in a pocket or was being used. At the time of the report, none of the injuries resulted in death — that is, until in May 2018 when a Florida man was killed when his e-cigarette exploded.
Because of these reported accidents involving e-cigarettes and similar devices, it has been noted that these devices present a unique hazard due to their shape and the presence of a lithium-ion battery in a device that, when used, is so close to the face of the user. The Fire Administration said that the shape of e-cigarettes, which is cylindrical, makes them more likely to act as though they are “flaming rockets” if a battery fails. That is why, while the failure rate of the lithium-ion batteries is very minute, the consequences of a failure has the possibility to be severe and, at times, deadly.
Accidents like the one that Brown experienced are incredibly complicated for the victims and for their respective families. Thankfully, there are lawyers who are experienced in cases like this.
