Fritch — Pedestrian Dead After Collision on SH-136
Posted on Tuesday, February 5th, 2019 at 1:13 am
A man was killed after being hit by a vehicle in Hutchinson County on Thursday, January 31, 2019.
According to the initial investigation, at approximately 3:15 p.m., Budd Leroy Kerr, 63, was driving a 1988 Ford F-150 on Texas State Highway 136 when it suddenly experienced some mechanical problem within the turning lane of Broadway. Kerr then stepped out of the vehicle to work on the problem. Unfortunately, while he was doing some repairs on his car, the vehicle’s drive train engaged, thus seriously injuring Kerr. Medical assistance was provided for him, but sadly, Kerr was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation is still ongoing for this particular accident.
It is unfortunate to hear of the passing of Budd Leroy Kerr. Alas, he is not the first victim whose life is taken away by a car accident. Car accidents are a problem in this day and age, and yet, they still continue to happen on a regular basis. In a statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
Car accidents are reported to be deadly for pedestrians particularly. The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) estimates that the number of pedestrian deaths in the U.S. is 6,000 in 2017. This is a 27% increase from 2007 to 2016, and it is said that the number in 2017 is a 25-year high.
Additionally, there are five states that had the most number of pedestrian fatalities in 2017, and these are California, Florida, New York, Arizona, and Texas. These states accounted for about 43% of pedestrian fatalities during the first half of 2017 despite the fact that they are home to only 30% of the U.S. population. The GHSA also claims that children and the elderly are the most vulnerable to this kind of accident.
Car accidents, especially the auto-pedestrian ones, are quite difficult to the victims and their respective families.
