Did you develop an infection after taking Jardiance? You could be owed money.
While Jardiance has not yet settled any claims for patients who took the drug and developed Fournier’s gangrene, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (BIPI) and Eli Lilly already have a history of paying high-figure settlements and jury awards when their drugs harm others:
$650 Million – Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. – 2014
- BIPI agreed to pay $650 million to settle all 4,000 state and federal lawsuits over its blood thinner Pradaxa (dabigatran).
$95 Million – Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. – 2018
- BIPI agreed to pay $95 million to resolve allegations it engaged in marketing practices that defrauded Medicare and promoted the off-label use of four of its drugs.
Eli Lilly also agreed to a non-disclosed settlement in a case involving thousands of lawsuits over its testosterone replacement gel, Axiron.
What are SGLT2 inhibitors?
SGLT2 inhibitors are approved by the FDA for use with diet and exercise to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. They result in lower blood sugar by making the kidneys remove sugar from the body through the urine.
The FDA just announced a warning to doctors and patients about the dangers of the drug, citing five years’-worth of research that indicates that “some widely used diabetes drugs may, in some rare cases, cause a flesh-eating bacterial infection of the genitals” known as Fournier’s gangrene.
Empagliflozin, or Jardiance, was one of the SGLT2 inhibitors mentioned by the FDA press. The FDA reported that the agency identified 12 cases of Fournier’s gangrene in patients taking an SGLT2 inhibitor in the five years from March 2013 to May 2018.
What are the symptoms of Fournier’s gangrene?
Patients who took Jardiance and developed Fournier’s gangrene often experience painful and very noticeable symptoms including:
- Fever of above 100.4 Fahrenheit
- Pain and swelling in the genitals or the genital area reaching back to the rectum
- Tenderness, redness, or swelling
- Unpleasant odor coming from the infected area
- A crackling sound when the infected area is touched
Fournier’s gangrene is a serious condition that can be life-threatening if not treated immediately. If you suspect that you or someone you love may have developed this infection, seek medical treatment right away. Your doctor will likely advise that you discontinue the use of the drug, and will begin broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment and surgery if necessary.
